Residents share concern for development of USC medical school building
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Residents shared their concern about infrastructure changes that come with the University of South Carolina’s development for a new medical school.
The city held a work session meeting on Tuesday to discuss a plan to move power lines. The current plan is to have those power lines along Hardin Street consolidated, opposite of the new medical school building.
Residents of Booker Washington Heights shared their displeasure with the project at the work session. Vice President of Booker Washington Heights Neighborhood, J. Kevin Speaks, wants the city to look at other options.
“It goes through the way that they’re planning, and of course, it’ll probably be an eyesore to my community as it being an entrance to Booker Washington Heights. And we don’t know the safety risks that are involved with having those lines that close to residential properties,” Speaks said.
The community is invited to attend a meeting discussing the project further on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Drew Wellness Center.
