FIRST ALERT: New moon and Perseid Meteor Shower peak promise dazzling display

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - One of this week’s astronomical sights to behold is the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower. No telescope needed!

On August 12th and 13th, look towards the northeastern horizon after midnight. In between the constellations Cassiopeia and Perseus lies the radiant for this eye-catching meteor shower.

Something working in our favor this week is the new moon, which offers a darker backdrop to the shooting stars. If you’re able to get away from the city lights, experts say it’s possible to see more than 30 meteors per hour. Good luck!
