(Myrtle Beach-AP) November 16, 2005 - Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride has been ousted after eight years.
McBride received 43 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election, losing to political newcomer John Rhodes, who attributed the win to a large turnout for the run-off vote.
McBride has taken pride in starting controversy along the Grand Strand. He once asked the National Guard to patrol a motorcycle event attended mostly by black vacationers and opposed a gay bar from opening in downtown Myrtle Beach.
Turnout was almost as high Tuesday as it was for the city's general election earlier this month. Nearly 4,400 of Myrtle Beach's 14,000 registered voters turned out for the runoff.
