Traffic fatalities down for summer season
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - As the busy holiday weekend begins, troopers throughout the state are ready.
"We know historically that this is a deadly weekend," said Lance Cpl. David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Labor Day Weekend wraps up the 100 Deadly Days of Summer.
Last year, Highway Patrol reported 13 deaths on our highways during Labor Day weekend alone. There were 207 deaths during the 100 Deadly Days.
So far this year, the numbers are down.
"We're down 32 deaths this time this year compared to the same period last year," Jones said.
Jones said he credits the lower numbers to community involvement. People are calling Highway Patrol when they see something that's not right.
"We see that in South Carolina, our three deadly killers are DUI's, speeding, and no seat belts," Jones said.
There will be several DUI check points set up.
"There's going to be a large police presence this weekend," Jones said.
With the goal of preventing any tragedies on the roads.
"You can't put a price on a life," Jones said.
Troopers are counting on you to help them out this weekend.
