COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A Clarendon County church is working to expand resources for children and families in rural communities.

Pastor TJ Grooms of Unity Christian Church says the church has outgrown its current facilities and is raising money to build a new community center in Alcolu. The center would provide space for youth programs and outreach events serving families throughout the area.

One of those programs is the church’s annual community-wide baby shower, which serves about 150 expectant and new parents and draws roughly 500 people each year. Families receive items including diapers, wipes, strollers, car seats, and bassinets while also connecting with medical providers, child care centers, human services, and other nonprofit organizations.

To help fund the new center, the church will host its “Night of Unity Gala” on Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. Actress Ta’Rhonda Jones will serve as the event’s emcee.

Tickets are $125, with proceeds benefiting the community center and the church’s outreach efforts. For more details, visit the church’s website here.
