COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - As the Columbia Fireflies celebrate their 10th anniversary this season, they’ll also be honoring a part of the city’s baseball past.

The team announced Thursday that it will use the Capital City Bombers name as an alternate identity for a July 10-12 series at Segra Park. The Fireflies will also wear uniforms inspired by the Bombers’ plane logo as well as the black and red color scheme.

The Bombers originally started as the Columbia Mets in 1983 before taking on the newer name in 1993. The team went on to play in Columbia at Capital City Stadium before moving to Greenville in 2005, where they eventually became the Greenville Drive.

During their time in Columbia, the Bombers went to the playoffs six times and won the South Atlantic League championship in 1998. Notable alumni include major leaguers David Wright, Scott Kazmir, Lastings Milledge, Ángel Pagán and Yusmeiro Petit.

“As a part of this 10th anniversary, let’s also celebrate the past,” Fireflies Team President Brad Shank said Thursday. “Let’s celebrate all the great memories. Baseball is nostalgia. It’s memories.”

The Fireflies will also sell Bombers merchandise for fans as the Mason Jar Team Store and online.
