Health U: Deciding Between ER and Urgent Care
Sponsored by Lexington Medical Center
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Cold and flu season is here, and it can be confusing to know whether to head to urgent care or the emergency room. Dr. Thomas Gibbons explains that urgent care can handle a wide range of common illnesses and minor injuries. Contrary to popular belief, many urgent care centers also offer on-site testing, including X-rays, lab work, and ultrasounds, making it possible to get both a diagnosis and treatment in one visit.
Dr. Gibbons compares the decision to a traffic light: if the light is green, urgent care is the right choice; if it’s red, head to the emergency room. Life-threatening situations, like severe chest pain, sweating, nausea, or pain radiating to the arm, may indicate a heart attack and require immediate emergency care. Signs of a stroke (facial drooping, weakness in the arms, slurred speech, unsteady balance, or vision loss) also demand a trip to the ER.
For more minor issues, like a finger fracture, a lingering cough, or a mild sprain, urgent care can get you in and out efficiently. The key takeaway is simple: if you’re facing a life- or limb-threatening condition, call 911 and go to the emergency room. For everyday illnesses and minor injuries, urgent care is a convenient and effective option.
