COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The American Red Cross is seeking help from South Carolina citizens in an effort to replenish an "extremely low summer blood supply."

According to the Red Cross, blood donations have fallen seriously short in the past few months, resulting in about 39,000 fewer donations than what they need so far this year.

Officials say the summer months are also a peak time for when hospitals need blood.

"Of course accidents and sometimes surgeries, people need blood donations for surgeries, cancer patient need blood donations and a person can use multiple donations during one surgery," Cheryl Austin with the Red Cross said.

To combat this, the Red Cross has set up several blood donation opportunities from July 5 to July 25:

American Red Cross Columbia Blood Donation Center, 2751 Bull St.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.; closed Sunday.
