SC National Guard Troops prepare to for deployment over the weekend
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - It's set to be a bitter sweet weekend for the families of 60 South Carolina National Guard Troops.
On Saturday and Sunday, members of the A Company of the 1-111th General Support Aviation Battalion will begin deployment. They'll first be sent to Texas before going overseas to support "Operation Spartan Shield" in Kuwait.
On Friday, members were given a special sendoff at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover. Hundreds were there to wish the soldiers well on their mission.
"Overall it's good. You get to spend a lot of family time at the last minute. Try to loose up last minute loose ends and just take care of what you can. Be around them as much as possible," said Sgt. Bryan Baxley with the SC National Guard.
"I was surprised. I didn't think as many people would show up. As many important people and families. It felt pretty good," said Spec. Rober Mitchell.
