Fire officials offer holiday safety tips

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday's fire where two children were killed at St. Andrews apartments is a tragic reminder about the importance of being prepared for a potential fire no matter where you live.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said they see a slight increase in calls during the holiday season.

"You know your house very well, but when you have a house full of smoke and you hold your hand up in front of your face and you can hardly see your hand in front of your face, people do tend to panic," Jenkins said. "They might go into areas that they're familiar with but they just can't get out. That's why we tell people, always practice getting out of your own home."

Jenkins said if there is a fire even if you think you have it successfully put out; still call the fire department to make sure.

Jenkins also stressed the importance of renter's insurance. If you are living in an apartment you should really have it to make sure you are protected.
