Volunteers serve holiday dinner to Naval personnel headed overseas

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

More than 180 sailors were treated to a surprise feast Sunday before they deploy overseas.

This is the fifth year of the event. The purpose is to honor the men and women who are headed overseas to serve their country.

The naval unit left their families weeks ago to come to the midlands for combat training and will deploy after they complete training.

Volunteers spent the afternoon serving a meal for them at the National Guard armory on Bluff Rd.

"The sailors do come here to train and when they're done with their training, most of their families live so far away that they cannot come," said volunteer Carol Davis.  "So for that period of time before they deploy, we become their family for a few hours, and give them their hugs and goodbyes."

The navy men and women who participated in the dinner Sunday are assigned to missions throughout the world, including Africa and Afghanistan.
