Jobs coming to the Midlands, leaving the Upstate

IRMO, SC (WIS) - While 50 new jobs are headed to the Midlands, 40 others are being lost in the Upstate.

In Richland County, Appalachian Underwriters has announced they are expanding their presence in the state with a $1 million investment.

The insurance company currently has offices in Irmo, and they will be expanding that facility and adding new positions there.

But in the Upstate, budget cuts are the reason 12 part-time and 28 full-time employees at Greenville Technical College have lost their jobs.

Officials also say they need to cancel some classes as well.

The college president says the school had no choice but to make the cuts to off set the loss of more than $3 million from the state.

He also says the cuts come while enrollment surges as laid-off workers seek training for new jobs.
