W. Cola. shooting victim dies

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The West Columbia Police Department says a Columbia man shot on September 28th died on Wednesday.

Zachariah Chaplin was 31 years old.

Police Chief Dennis Tyndall says Chaplin was wounded in a shooting at Shaggy's Back Room Bar on Sunset Blvd.

Chaplin was shot twice in the upper body and was transported to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital for treatment. On October 31st, he was transferred to the Charlie Norwood Veterans Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Charged in the initial incident was 28-year-old Andrew E. Torrence, Jr., of West Columbia. He was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and is still being held at the Lexington County Detention Center on $200,000 bond.

According to Chief Tyndall, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.  Pending results of that autopsy, additional charges may be forthcoming.
