CONWAY, SC (WIS) - Conway police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the death of a mother that was shot and killed in front of her four children.
Police say someone flagged down an officer last week in the Huckabee Heights community and told them about a shooting victim.
The responding officer found a woman with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Horry County Deputy Coroner Chris Burroughs says 29-year-old Monica Burroughs died a short time later at Conway Medical Center.
Neighbors say Burroughs was shot in broad daylight while her young children watched.
"She was everything to us. Everyone counted on her. Even though I'm her older sister-to me she was my biggest sister. She was my role model. She was my everything, and I'm going to always carry her in my heart," says Michelle Burroughs, Monica's sister.
"They kind of tussled a little bit, and that's when I jumped out to go across to try to help her. And that's when the gun went off. And it was already too late, and the young lady took off running," says Joanne Davis, another of Monica's sisters, who was with her during the incident.
Police say crime is an ongoing problem in the area.
Conway police spokesperson Catina Hipp said, "This area is one of our higher crime areas. We do have community watch officers in the area trying to quiet down the area and have had some success."
Conway police arrested 17-year-old Brittany Alexis Johnson this week in Hartsville.
Though an official timeline of events hasn't been released, family members say Burroughs and Johnson had been arguing over Burroughs' boyfriend.
Michelle Burroughs says Johnson had threatened Burroughs several times in the past.
"She went around telling other people that she was going to shoot her. The day before she brought a gun and pulled a gun on her the day before the day that she got shot," Michelle says.
Burroughs' family is still reeling over the loss of a close friend and sister.
"It hurts. It hurts. It hurts. The pain is just unbearable. But her pain will just make me stronger," says Davis.
