Former South Carolina teacher charged with having sex with teen

CLINTON, SC (AP/WIS) - A former Laurens County teacher has been charged with having sex with a teenage boy over several months in 2005.

Forty-nine-year-old Karen Robbins was arrested over the weekend and charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three counts of committing a lewd act on a child. Arrest warrants state the sex occurred with a 15-year-old in her car and twice at her home.

Robbins was a private school teacher at the time and officials did not think the sex was with one of her students.

Messages left at a telephone listing for a Karen Robbins in Clinton, and with the county public defender's office, were not immediately returned.

Robbins was an elementary special education teacher for the private Thornwell Home for Children when the alleged incidents occurred.

You may recall at the end of last school year two other teachers from Laurens County were accused of having sex with students.

Earlier this month, former teacher Allenna Williams Ward admitted to having sex with five students. The acts happened at several locations - including the school, a motel, a park and behind a restaurant.

In a different case, former teacher Wendie Schweikert is accused of having sex with an 11-year-old boy.

The cases sparked accusations of racism in the Upstate because both teachers were put on house arrest. Protestors say if the teachers were black, they would have been in jail.
