As areas in Chesterfield begin to flood, some shelters begin to experience flooding.

Cheraw Community center started to experience flooding around 9 p.m. last night and about 70 people had to be rescued by the South Carolina National Guard.

The SC National Guard used vehicles designed to make it through high water and after some time they were able to ferry the rescued people to a nearby high school.

"The water was getting too high too fast and we decided to..got with the town administrator and we decided to evac the shelter," said a resident at the evacuated shelter, Barry Driggers. "We had to go slow because we had elderly people in the back of the LMTVs so they did an outstanding job, I can't say enough about the 4th or the 118th"

The police chief estimates the damages will total to around 100 thousand dollars.

However, he is more concerned about tomorrow night, when night he says the river will crest to a height that hasn't been seen here since 1945.

We will keep you updated on this situation.
