9-year-old Sumter child dies after drowning in waterway

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A Sumter child has died after playing in a waterway with four other boys, Sumter police said in a Facebook post late Wednesday.

Police said they responded to a drowning off Burkett Drive, where five boys ranging from 7 to 12 years old were playing near a waterway on Burkett Drive. a 9-year-old boy went into the water and went under.

The other boys ran to a nearby home where 911 was called. After a number of first responders were called, including the Sumter dive team and SC Department of Natural Resources, the child was located. He was taken to Palmetto Health Tuomey Hospital and died.

Police say no foul play was suspected. The Sumter County Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy, a standard procedure for a child's death.

The name of the child has not been released.
