SC gubernatorial candidate called for Army National Guard duty as Hurricane Florence approaches
WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - James Smith, the Democratic party candidate for South Carolina governor, has been called to serve with the National Guard with Hurricane Florence drawing near.
Smith, a Major in the South Carolina Army National Guard, suspended his gubernatorial campaign on Monday as the hurricane makes its way to the coast.
"This is a time to help our friends and neighbors get ready for this potential disaster any way we can, not for politics," Smith said after suspending his campaign. "We urge each and every South Carolinian to take appropriate measures to stay safe."
Smith will be stationed out at the Emergency Management Division in West Columbia.
