(WIS) - Spring Valley High School has received a great gift from an equipment manufacturer and an NFL legend.

Spring Valley High School received the surprise of a lifetime when they learned they were chosen as a winner of Riddell's '18 in 18' Smarter Football program. The team was notified with a special congratulatory message from Riddell brand ambassador Peyton Manning.

The message reads:

Riddell's annual program received nearly 1,400 applications this year and is donating equipment to 18 winning programs across the country, spanning youth to college, that have demonstrated their commitment to a smarter, safer game.

The Spring Valley High School coaching staff is committed to teaching their players smarter tackling and blocking fundamentals. They are continuously instructing their players to lead with their shoulders and not their heads when initiating contact with another player. The coaches also make use of film study to help correct poor playing habits in their players.

Off the field, the seniors on the team are regular visitors at the town's elementary and middle schools where they talk to young students about the importance of education and the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
