Brookland-Cayce High School student found with handgun on school property, taken into custody

CAYCE, SC (WIS) - A 16-year-old student at Brookland-Cayce High School in Cayce was taken into custody on Sept. 4 after a small caliber handgun was found in his backpack, according to Cayce Department of Public Safety.

The weapon was found in the student's backpack during an investigation into stolen property at the school, officials say.

After locating the weapon, school administrators immediately notified the School Resource Officer and turned over the weapon.

The gun was loaded according to officials.

At this time, it appears that the student brought the weapon to school accidentally and no threats were made against any students or faculty, Cayce DPS said.  The student was cooperative with school administrators as well as the School Resource Officer during the incident.

The student was taken into custody immediately and transported to SCDJJ.

The student has been suspended from school pending a disciplinary hearing. He will not be identified due to his age.
