(CNN) – A family outing turned tragic on Thursday after a father and three children were killed in an accident on the lake, leaving the mother as the only survivor.
Erik Fryman and his wife Cari Mews-Fryman took their three children to Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin for an end of the summer trip.
They paddled four miles from Madeline Island, when the wind caused their kayak to flip over.
All were wearing life jackets, but authorities say they were trapped by thunderstorms and Lake Superior's choppy waters.
The family tried to swim to Michigan Island, but waves separated them.
It took Mews-Fryman's sister five hours to receive a text for help.
Fryman and the children who were ages three, six and nine years old, died.
Mews-Fryman was found alive in the water suffering from hypothermia.
Coast Guard officials said hypothermia probably played a large factor in the deaths.
