(WIS) - The primary election for South Carolina Senate seat 20 will have a first for the state - a transgender candidate.

Dayna Smith is one of seven candidates running for the Senate seat left vacant after John Courson resigned following a guilty plea on official misconduct in June.

Smith, a Democrat, is running against attorney Dick Harpootilan and Kyle Lacio. She says her grassroots campaign is forging a new voice in the community.
