COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The Columbia Police Department announced the death of one of their K-9 officers on Saturday.

Officers said 2-year-old Turbo experienced a heat-related work injury on Thursday and died on Saturday as a result of his injuries.

Turbo was a yellow Labrador Retriever who had been with the Columbia Police Department for about 7 months. He was trained in explosive detection and assigned to Master Police Officer (MPO) D. Hurt.

CPD says that they will investigate to determine the circumstances of Turbo's death or if any policy or procedures were violated. The investigation is standard procedure for any work-related accident or serious/fatal injury.

The department asks for everyone to keep Turbo and MPO Hurt as well as the rest of the CPD Bomb and K-9 Units in their prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.
