FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office says they are investigating a suspected meth lab in the parking lot of a grocery store.
Sheriff Will Montgomery says the suspected meth lab was located in a Bi-Lo in the Winnsboro area as they responded to a trespassing call.
The person that prompted the trespassing call was unknowingly inside a store employee's vehicle. The meth lab was located inside the employee's car, deputies found.
Deputies expect to be on-scene for approximately two to three hours while waiting on a specialized cleaning and collection service to arrive for the proper collection and disposal of these potentially hazardous items.
"We are thankful to the Bi-Lo staff for their vigilance and quick notification of our office. Our deputies were on scene quickly to identify this meth lab and to take the proper steps necessary in safely handling it," Sheriff Montgomery said. "Investigating methamphetamine labs is a very dangerous part of law enforcement and we want to make sure that this incident is handled in a safe manner. Unfortunately, these processes are time-consuming. We appreciate the patience of the public and the staff at Bi-Lo while we continue this investigation."
Deputies did detain the person responsible for the rolling meth lab.
"We want to thank the many citizens who provided us information within the past few hours in our search for this suspect. This arrest was a direct result of these citizens' willingness to get involved to help keep their community safe," Montgomery said. "This is just another great example of law enforcement and citizens working together. Our deputies continue to monitor the situation until a cleanup crew arrives and I want to, again, thank the public for their patience in this matter."
We have a crew on the way to the scene and will report more information when we get it.
