COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Midlands woman was finally able to return to her home this week after the 2015 floods caused severe damage to her floors and walls.
For the past six months, Alice Briggs was forced to live in a hotel and with family members because her home became uninhabitable. That's when a national disaster recovery organization known as SBP stepped up to help.
For the past couple of months, AmeriCorps members replaced her floors and walls. A welcome home celebration took place Friday afternoon and volunteers welcomed Alice to her new home.
"Today feels like a new birth. Even though I've never been married, listen to this all you single people out there, I feel like a new bride. The doors have been opened up wide for me. Big blessings, greater blessings I know are to come," Briggs said.
Over the past two and a half years, AmeriCorps and volunteers have rebuilt 80 homes in the Columbia area. They have a goal of rebuilding 35 homes this year.
