On this fourth of July, Richland County deputies honored a fallen hero and our first responders.
Earlier this morning, RCSD held its sixth annual Memorial event to honor former deputy and National Guardsman Ryan Rawl.
Rawl was only 30 years old when he was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in 2012. He left behind a wife and 2 young children.
He was also a former Richland County Deputy.
The memorial event involved a two-member challenge that was open to all ages at the Statehouse. Hundreds paired off in teams of two to take part in fitness challenges.
Rawl's family was there to cheer on the participants, who completed all kinds of physical tasks and challenging exercises.
Registration was $25 and the proceeds went to scholarships offered in Rawl's name. Rawl was a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber back in 2012.
