PELION, SC (WIS) - A 40-year-old was killed in a vehicle crash where the vehicle he was riding in struck a ditch, flipped multiple times and ejected him on US 178 near Forts Pond Road on June 23.
Robert Andrew Mays, of Columbia, was pronounced dead at an area hospital after the driver of the vehicle Mays was in attempted to pass another vehicle while driving east on US 178. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says that the driver was "under the influence" when they swerved back into the right lane and lost control.
The Lexington County Coroner confirmed that Mays was killed by traumatic injuries suffered in the ejection. The driver of the vehicle suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. SCHP has been unable to determine if seatbelts were worn by the occupants.
The accident remains under investigation by SCHP.
