COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - City officials are gearing up for what could be one heck of a party on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the newly-minted national champion South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team.
While precise details about the event have not yet been released, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin confirmed the parade to celebrate the team will take place Sunday at 3 p.m.
The parade route will begin on Laurel and Main Streets and travel down Main Street to the State House.
"These incredible young ladies and Coach [Dawn] Staley secured the bag by bringing home a national championship, and the entire community wants to congratulate them on their hard work," Mayor Steve Benjamin said in a statement. "Our men's team also proved to be a force this season under Coach [Frank] Martin in making it to the Final Four. This has truly been a basketball season that Carolina fans will never forget."
This is the third such parade for Gamecock athletics in the past 7 years. In 2010 and 2011, the Gamecock baseball team won back to back national championships.
The Gamecocks women's basketball team defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 67-55 on Sunday night to secure the team's first national championship.
Due to the parade route on Sunday, there will be no parking after 11:59 p.m. on Saturday along the west side (City Hall side) of Main Street between Laurel and Gervais streets.
