SLED: Crime decreasing, but crimes against law enforcement jump 20 percent

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The State Law Enforcement Division says violent and property crime rates are down statewide, according to their yearly reports.

The Uniform Crime Reports for 2015 says violent crimes are down 0.4 percent and property crimes are down 4.6 percent from 2014 based on reports compiled from law enforcement agencies around the state.

While SLED Chief Mark Keel is concerned about the occurrences of murder and nonnegligent homicides increasing, he is encouraged by other rates decreasing.

"Decreases in categories such as burglary and assaults involving domestic relationships are encouraging, but what is troubling is the statistics for the number of law enforcement officers killed or assaulted increased substantially by over 20 percent in 2015 over previous years."
