(Tehran, Iran-AP) June 19, 2005 - A Northwest Airlines flight has arrived in the Netherlands, after having to make an emergency stop in Iran.

US carriers don't serve Iran because of American economic sanctions. But the flight from India to Amsterdam was diverted to Tehran after an indicator detected a fire in the cargo hold.

It turned out to be a false alarm. The plane eventually left Tehran for the Netherlands, arriving some eight hours late.

An airline spokesman says a big reason for the delay was "negotiating and purchasing fuel in a place that we normally do not divert to." The plane carried 255 passengers and crew.
