ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The parents of an Orangeburg County 3-year-old who accidentally shot himself are already out of jail on bond after being charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

Timothy Ryan Collins II, 29, and Brittany Collins, 25, were both charged with neglect after turning themselves in to face charges. Both were released a short time later on $5,000 personal recognizance bonds.

Investigators say the incident happened on Feb. 24 when Timothy was having car trouble and called Brittany to pick him up. Before leaving his vehicle on the side of the road, the father placed his handgun in his wife's car with the child.

From there, deputies said, the child was able to easily grab the weapon and fire it.

The child, whose 4th birthday is today, remains hospitalized where his condition is not currently known.

"It's a frightening situation that could have been made more tragic," Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a statement. "We feel for this family but we have a duty to protect this child when the parents become careless. It's a frightening situation that could have been made more tragic.
