COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - An investigation is now underway at Kirkland Correctional Institution after two doctors were assaulted on Monday.
According to South Carolina Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Sommer Sharpe, one inmate was involved in the attack.
The two doctors, who went to the institution from an outside medical practice, were treated at the facility by agency medical staff following the assault. The inmate was not injured during the incident.
Sharpe said the attack occurred at Gilliam Psychiatric Hospital in the prison, which is a maximum-security facility.
SCDC has not identified the inmate.
At this time, no charges have been filed.
