NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An infant born at Newberry County Memorial Hospital last week was surrendered to the Department of Social Services the next day under the Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act.
Officials with the Newberry County Department of Social Services reported in a Notice of Abandonment Monday the child was born November 25 and turned over to medical professionals the next day. The infant is an African-American male. He is now in custody of DSS.
Upon information provided, the DSS believes the child falls under jurisdiction for Daniel's Law, which is the Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act.
Under the act, a permanency planning hearing will be held on January 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Newberry Family Court. Any person wanting to assert parental rights must attend the hearing.
