COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The coroner has identified the woman who died a "suspicious death" Friday morning and officers have now charged her son, who lived with her, with her murder.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as 88-year-old Johnnie Hackett. Watts said he was able to determine she was strangled to death.
Hackett's son, 55-year-old Darrial Hackett, has been charged with murder, according to officers with the Columbia Police Department.
A motive has not been confirmed by investigators, however, WIS is told they believe Darrial argued with his mother and assaulted her before he killed her.
Officers responded to the Hackett's home located at 838 Cindy Drive shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Friday for a requested welfare check. That is when officers say they found the mother's body.
After collecting DNA and additional evidence, officers say it seems like the son attempted to make the crime scene look like a burglary.
After being questioned, Darrial Hackett was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
