Amtrak train collides with unoccupied vehicle on tracks

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving an Amtrak train and a car in Northeast Richland County early Monday.

It happened just before 2 a.m. on Experiment Road near Two Notch Road, not far from the Village at Sandhill.

Troopers say no one was inside the car at the time of impact, and there are no reports of injuries.

Amtrak says at the time of the crash, 148 passengers were on board Train 91, the Silver Star. Train service was temporarily suspended while the wreckage was removed from the scene. Service resumed about an hour later.

The Silver Star provides service daily between New York City and Miami. The train was heading southbound toward Columbia, then on to Miami at the time of the crash.
