CLARENDON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Turbeville Correctional Institution is on lockdown after a correctional officer was assaulted.
S.C. Department of Corrections spokesman Dexter Lee said that at about 2 p.m. Monday, the correctional officer was assaulted in the Taw Caw dorm of Turbeville Correctional Institution. The incident led to "a disturbance" in the dorm, Lee said.
The dorm was secured at about 6 p.m. Monday by SCDC Emergency Response Teams.
Between 2-6 p.m., Lee said the inmates were out of their cells within the housing unit. The housing unit was secured; however, he said inmates were "displaying unruly, uncooperative behavior." The inmates were back in their cells by 6 p.m.
Lee said the correctional officer was treated and released from a nearby hospital.
There is an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Turbeville Correctional Institution remains on lockdown status.
