RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An 2-month-old infant was abandoned at a Columbia hospital Monday.
The Richland County Department of Social Services said the infant was born July 21 and was left at Palmetto Health Richland. The infant is now under the protection of Safe Haven with medical professionals.
DSS officials described the baby as an African-American female, weighing about 12 pounds. The infant is now in DSS custody.
Children up to 60 days old may be abandoned under the Safe Haven Act, and the child falls under the jurisdiction for Daniel's Law, which is the Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act.
Under the Act, a permanency planning hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 17 at the Richland County Family Courthouse, located at 1701 Main St. in Columbia. Any person wishing to assert parental rights for the infant must do so at this hearing.
