COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - It's been a trying past few days for some SCE&G customers in the Midlands. Power outages Monday and over the weekend left some of them in the dark for hours.

Outages Monday even wound up causing problems for some businesses in the Vista.

SCE&G says the causes behind these two recent outages are not connected. They say the one that happened Monday was caused by a blown fuse in their system --- somewhere along Gervais Street near the State Museum. That affected about 68 customers on Gervais Street.

Businesses in the Vista say the outages cost them hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

"Everything is technology savvy in this place," says Ruth Armistead, general manager of Pura Medical Spa. "We have our music system. We have our computer system, so we couldn't book any appointments."

It was a similar story at Jason's Deli.

"We didn't have the ability to cook anything in our convection oven and our toaster oven and our panini press, so we unfortunately had to turn away customers and lock the door," says Travis White, assistant manager Jason's Deli.

On Saturday, a downed utility pole that caught fire took out power for about 22,000 customers. The company says it's still looking into what caused that to happen.

Meanwhile, officials say blown fuses like what caused Monday's outage are common due to either falling tree branches or wildlife.
