Man driving moped on downtown sidewalk hit with drug charge

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A 24-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning when he ran from police after an officer stopped him while he was driving a moped on a downtown sidewalk.

An officer first spotted Jahquan Peterson driving on the sidewalk around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Gervais Streets.

After the officer stopped him, Peterson threw a black pouch on the ground and ran, police said.

Following a brief foot chase, the officer arrested Peterson.

The officer later found the black pouch, which contained about seven grams of heroin.

Peterson, who faces charges of manufacturing/distribution of drugs and failure to stop on police command, was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
