COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Athletes enjoyed friendly jousting, a game of HORSE, shaved ice, and some good food Thursday during USC's Back to School Cookout.

The cookout, however, doubled as a celebration for the athletics department after the Gamecocks came away with the 10-5 win in the first ever Certified SC Grown Palmetto Series against the Clemson Tigers.

"Today was a great way to welcome the kids back, especially the Carolina athletes by recognizing their first year of victory in the Palmetto Series Challenge and winning the Cup," said South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers.

The series follows all of the matchups between the Gamecocks and Tigers from athletics to academics. However, this year's series will have more fan involvement, according to Commissioner Weathers.

"The way we're going to improve it is have fans more engaged, more contests, a lot of social media engagement," Weathers said, "and have them talk about what the rivalry means, give them some contests so that they recognize this is all about agriculture and athletics."

The series also supports local farms while raising awareness about products grown within the state.

The Gamecocks and Tigers will square off once again in the Palmetto Series beginning August 26 when USC hosts Clemson in men's soccer.
