COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott is supporting Donald Trump's call for law and order after Trump's visit to the Milwaukee area on Tuesday night.

The city has been rocked by violence and looting after the police shooting of Sylville Smith, who police say had a gun.

Scott said the uprising after Smith's shooting shows that the country is on a "hair trigger" when it comes to police.

"Unnecessary response to what appears to be a necessary shooting on behalf of the police officer," Scott said. "We should expect and anticipate strong responses when law enforcement does something that they should not have done. We should come to the table and had that conversation and not target law enforcement officers in any way shape or form.

What we saw in Milwaukee, however, has nothing to do with law enforcement not doing it right. It appears that law-enforcement got it right. They did the right thing."

Scott said the country is polarized, concerned, and economically strapped. He added it's important to understand the facts of any situation and respond to those facts.
