ELLOREE, SC (WIS) - The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office says a 1-year-old and his 77-year-old great-grandmother were the two victims in a house fire that may have started as a result of a lightning strike.
According to Orangeburg Fire Chief Teddy Wolfe, firefighters were called to a residence on Crockett Way in Elloree around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday and found the home engulfed in flames.
After extinguishing the fire, fire officials located the bodies of two victims in the living room, according to Wolfe.
The two victims, the coroner's office said, were Annie Bell Darby, 77, and Richard Haynes, 1. Both died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
SLED officials believe the cause of the fire to be natural, but that one of many lightning strikes in the area could be the culprit. SLED is investigating, but does not think the fire's cause is suspicious.
