SALUDA COUNTY (WIS) - Officers with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division have arrested a Saluda woman accused of misusing money belonging to a woman in her care who suffers from dementia.
Friday agents arrested Verna Karen Wertz, 60, on a felony charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. According to the affidavit, Wertz had power of attorney for the victim, who suffers from dementia. The affidavit says Wertz used $48,331 from the victim's bank accounts that was not for the victim's interest or care.
The affidavit says Wertz confessed to the crime.
She was taken to the Saluda County Detention Center.
If convicted, Wertz faces a fine of up to $5,000 and five years in prison.
