SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A Sumter County church is hoping for answers and justice after a destructive rampage of vandalism that could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Now the Sheriff's Office is offering a reward.

After the weekend of May 29, workers at Wedgefield Baptist Church discovered the church's school had been trashed. Someone broke a window, got in, and ransacked the school.

The vandal stole a couple of DVD players worth about $50, but also spilled paint, defecated in the school, and sprayed four fire extinguishers throughout the inside of the building. That left caustic dust in all the rooms, on all the carpets and supplies, and in the air conditioning system.

Virtually all of the school's supplies had to be thrown out. The interior has to be extensively cleaned and the school now figures the cost of all this damage at around $30,000.

Investigators think this is the work of local kids who knew when there wouldn't be anyone in here. They left behind valuable computers and audio equipment, but all that has to be evaluated to see if it's ruined by the fire extinguisher dust.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Department is offering a $500 reward for information.
