Man charged with DUI after hitting State Transport Police vehicle

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A man is charged with driving under the influence after deputies say he hit a State Transport Police vehicle Wednesday.

Nicholas Watford, 26, hit a stopped State Transport Police vehicle at mile marker 10 on Interstate 77 southbound at about 4 p.m Wednesday when the officer was stopped with a tractor trailer, according to Richland County Lt. Curtis Wilson. No one was injured, but Lance Cpl. Khan Phan was taken to the hospital for observation.

Phan has been with State Transport Police since 2007, according to Lt. Kelley Hughes with S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Watford was taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
