Animal advocates say a local dog is lucky to be alive after it was shot in the head and dragged behind a car.
Pictures of the injured three month old Boxer/Pit Bull mix pup from Kershaw County are getting lots of clicks on Facebook. The pictures are being called absolutely disgusting by the animal advocates and many others.
However, despite the dog’s injuries the rescuers are hoping this puppy will have a new home soon.
The Executive Director of the Kershaw County Humane Society says this pup, now named Sammie, was found by someone near Cassatt earlier in the week. It had a severely broken back leg, a severely lacerated front leg, and a bullet lodged in its head.
The director says she's not sure what happened, but a rescue out of New York City, Rescue Dogs Rock, believes Sammie was shot with a .22 caliber gun, dragged behind a vehicle, and left for dead. The New York rescue, which is affiliated with Kershaw County Humane Society, is helping Sammie heal.
The puppy had a surgery on Wednesday and another on Friday, but there's still a chance its back leg will need to be amputated. There's also a chance it won't be able to use its front leg again either.
Still, the animal advocate says the dog is tough. Sammie is still wagging his tail and keeping his head up.
The rescue is searching for a new home for the dog. It's also hoping someone, somehow, will be held accountable.
No word on if law enforcement is investigating in any capacity. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said he hadn't heard of anything as of Friday afternoon.
The humane society in Kershaw County believes the dog's a stray, which means finding out who's responsible might be tough.
