Father arrested after infant exhibits 'shaken baby syndrome' symptoms

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A 20-year-old Kershaw County man has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after investigators say his 4-month-old child was taken to a nearby hospital with head injuries.

According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, Alvin Davis, IV was taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center where he remains pending a bond hearing.

Davis' child was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Children's Hospital on April 29 with head injuries. Kershaw County investigators were called to the hospital after a child abuse physician called the sheriff's office.

Matthews said the physician told his deputies the baby was exhibiting symptoms of what's known as "shaken baby syndrome," which results in bleeding on the brain.

Investigators interviewed family members and decided to place the infant and a 15-month-old sibling under protective custody. However, according to Matthews, the scene back in Kershaw turned ugly when deputies attempted to remove the 15-month-old from a residence on Haile Gold Mine Road.

Matthews said a group of about 20 to 30 family members and friends attempted to block deputies from leaving the home with the child.

No word on the condition of the infant.
