Lexington County house fire kills person and pet

SPRINGDALE, SC (WIS) - A woman and a dog died in a house fire in Springdale on Saturday morning.

Lexington County coroner Margaret Fisher identified the victim as 54-year-old Wanda Yates Adkins of West Columbia. Fisher said Adkins was found dead in the home on Jupiter Street. An autopsy was to be performed on Sunday to determine the cause of death.

Lexington County Public Information Officer Harrison Cahill said two people escaped the burning home and were waiting outside when firefighters arrived around 7:30 a.m. Saturday. One female victim was transported to Palmetto Health Richland hospital for smoke inhalation. Another female victim was reported to be placed in the care of family members on scene.

Officials said Adkins' body and a pet were discovered dead in the home after the fire was extinguished.

Springdale Police and the State Law Enforcement Division are investigating the cause of the fire.
