Child left at school leads to discovery of murder-suicide

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The Richland County Sheriff's Department says a 6-year-old not picked up from school led deputies to the discovery of a murder-suicide Wednesday.

When the child was not picked up from school Wednesday afternoon, deputies checked the address on Amsterdam Drive looking for the child's parents.

Sheriff Leon Lott says after gaining access to the apartment, deputies found the victim and the suspect lying on the floor. Both had been shot.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says Stephanie Wallace, 34, died from a gunshot to the head. Her estranged husband, Keith Wallace, 32, according to Watts, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The Wallace's had the 6-year-old child together.

"This was a domestic situation that turned deadly," according to Lott.

Investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events based on the evidence.
