Lexington native to lead National Championship flyover

CHARLESTON, SC (WIS) - A South Carolina native will be leading the squadron of fighter jets that will fly over the College Football National Championship game in Phoenix, Arizona Monday night.

According to an article posted to The Citadel Newsroom, Maj. Matthew "Diesel" Mayer, a native of Lexington, SC, will be leading the F-35 flyover at the big football game.

Mayer, who has served in the Air Force for 12 years, is a Citadel graduate and is currently based at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix. This will be his first flyover of an event. He says he's excited about the opportunity and has been enjoying the planning process for the nationally televised game.

"It's an awesome feeling to be able to do something I love while also serving my country," Mayer said.

After the flyover, he and members of the squadron plan to return to the stadium to watch the game with family and friends from South Carolina. The National Championship game has No. 1 ranked Clemson playing against No. 2 Alabama.

Kick off for the big game is set for Monday, January 11, at 8:30 p.m.
